Caroline’s Medical fund!
At just 15 years old, Caroline Swope's life was irrevocably altered when a distracted driver hit her as she crossed the street. The accident, which occurred less than two weeks before her 16th birthday, left her with devastating injuries and a dramatically different future.
Once an outgoing, athletic, and happy girl with dreams of a medical career, Caroline now battles the possibility of paraplegia as she ages, dysautonomia, and psoriatic arthritis. These conditions stem from the trauma and have led to spinal degeneration, breakdown inflammatory arthritis in sacroiliac joints, severe pain, and significant physical limitations, including partial paralysis in her legs. She struggles with basic mobility, is unable to walk long distances, and cannot return to school or work without intense pain. The intensity of the accidents she has been involved in have lead to complex PTSD and severe pain that is not well controlled by the state insurance. She has done well before inpatient with ketamine therapy for reducing pain and anxiety from the PTSD. Unfortunately, CalOptima does not cover any ketamine therapy for pain whatsoever. in fact, the only option in order to give her the relief in this area is to pay completely out of pocket for a private clinic to administer this life-changing drug for her.
Caroline's complex medical needs result in constant expenses. While she is fighting to secure long-term disability and in-home supportive services, many day-to-day costs remain uncovered. The financial burden is immense, falling largely on her fiancé, Anthony, and her mother, Eileen.
Our primary goal is to provide Caroline with a new wheelchair that properly fits her 6'2" frame, as her current one is inadequate.
