Oasis of Hope for Shelly
Where does one even begin when it comes to such an incredible example of what goodness and light looks like? As most of you know, Shelly (Rachelle) has been on a cancer journey that spans four decades now, having started in 1993. I'll spare you the details now, though if you'd like to read how incredible that journey has been, you can click the link here: https://www.gfclegacy.org/news/what-drives-me-by-rachelle-murphy/
Short story is: At 39 years old in1993 Shelly was diagnosed with Breast Cancer: Lumpectomy, Chemo, and Radiation. She went into remission and was cancer-free. Then in 2010, 17 years later, Shelly was diagnosed AGAIN with Breast Cancer. Same breast, different cancer. She opted for a full double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. A year later she was in remission. Fast forward to 2017. This is the big one: Her Breast Cancer had metastasized to her bones.
You don't realize the strength one possesses until you see them go through events like these in their lives.
Her doctors have been incredible with keeping it under control with bone strengthening and chemo medications, as well as a variety of other treatments including radiation and Tamoxifen. The hard realization is that under current treatment plans offered in the US, she will never be free of cancer. She'll never be able to have even a simple surgery, because if they open her up the cancer will spread like wildfire.
Here's where it gets amazing! There is a place in Mexico called Oasis of Hope Hospital. They specialize in treatment to eradicate this type of cancer and have high success rates for longevity. If anyone wants information, please let us know and we'll gladly provide. The downside to this is that it's out of network for her medical insurance and there's a large out of pocket cost. The program is $30,000 and they are offering her a grant of $2,000, so we need to raise the additional $28,000 to help them get there. Shelly and Leonard will both go and it's a 20-day in-depth treatment program at the facility. They will provide medications to continue treatments at home, and they will continue support her and her health for the next five years. This isn't a guarantee cure, though their numbers are incredible and they have seen many successes. Shelly feels strong and good about her decision to continue to advocate for her health
If you know my mom, you know she's the absolute first to help anyone in any way she's able to. I had to do some sweet-talking to get her to agree to ask all of you to support her in any way you are able. Prayers, sharing this post to your social media, financially, or anything else you can think of; It is all immensely appreciated.
Thank you. All of you. Each and every one of you for the love and support you've offered not only her, but our entire family and network of people. I know the love she has for all of you is immeasurable, as is the love all of you have for her.
All Our Love,
Shelly, Leonard, Scott (Carrie), Jen (Joe), and Charley (Doug)
