PATRICK OSBALDESTON FUND

We have established this Endowment Fund in Memory of our beloved Patrick Osbaldeston. We would like to provide recurring annual scholarships of $5000 through the Scarborough Faire Scholarship program for local youth interested in pursuing the arts.

Obituary of Patrick ‘Rethyn’ Gregory Osbaldeston

At 52 years 11 months and 17 days of age, Patrick ‘Rethyn’ Gregory Osbaldeston passed away in his home on January 20, 2025. He is survived by his parents, mother Mary Jo Madden, father Michael Osbaldeston, and stepmother Paula Osbaldeston. He was treasured by his siblings Jeannie (Taeke Baarsma) Osbaldeston, Jonathan (Nicole) Osbaldeston, Vanessa (David McCullough) Osbaldeston, August Osbaldeston, and Andrew Osbaldeston. He was the favorite Uncle to his nephew Gabriel and to all his nieces, Isabella, Leah, Juliana, and Evelyn.

He was preceded in death by brother Michael Bernard Osbaldeston, grandparents Bernard and Dorothy Osbaldeston, Joseph and Anna Madden, and stepmother Audrey Estes.

Pat, as he was known to most, was born in Irving, TX while his parents were studying at the University of Dallas. As a kid growing up in Irving and Dallas, he loved playing soccer and reading comic books. He attended St. Luke’s Catholic School where he was affectionately known as Monster, for his stature could intimidate. Any coins we could muster went to playing arcade games like Galaga, and when at home he performed routines to his beloved Weird Al Yankovic music. Weekends were filled with Atari battles and Godzilla movies.

At St Luke’s he took his first computer course on an old Apple desktop with floppy disks learning BASIC. His dad would say those computers would rot his brain, but they expanded his mind and enriched his life. He was thrilled when his mother brought home their first IBM AT computer while in high school. Even more thrilled when he got to take it apart. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory School and the Dallas Science and Engineering Magnet. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson in 1990 as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

He attended the University of North Texas from 1993-1995 where he studied computer science and the craft of jewelry design, which would become mainstays in his life.

Always a foodie, Patrick spent several years in the restaurant business and from a wee age had his sights set on having his own food truck, before it was even a thing. Patrick was always an out of the box thinker and ahead of his time. As a Kitchen Manager for Dave & Busters he opened two new restaurants in Chicago in the dead of winter. By the time that spring thaw came he was opening them in Hollywood Beach, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia where the weather better suited his warm personality.

He returned to school in the late 90s (in the early years of the World Wide Web) to pursue his combined interests in computers and graphic design, eventually working for companies such as Y2 Marketing, AIVIA, Verizon, and Fossil before joining NEC in 2007.

He was a valued member of the NEC Americas family for nearly 17 years, most recently serving as their Interactive Marketing Manager and Web Development Lead. He helped shape their identity and vision, and was a daily source of support and expertise.

Pat had what some may call hobbies, but for him were passions. He had an epic collection of books (Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Comics) and beautiful blades (swords, daggers, knives, etc.). He was also a gamer with a passion for World of Warcraft (WoW) and Diablo. He was known as Rethyn and he loved being a part of his guild and working together when going on raids. He practiced Martial Arts for many years at the Iron Dragon Dojo, which taught a mix of Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and Kung Fu. He received a green belt, but was posthumously awarded the rank of First-Degree Black Belt within the Iron Dragon fighting system.

In the spring he could be found at Scarborough Renaissance Festival spending time around like-minded people. His parents first brought him there as a little kid and it made such an impression on him that he went back frequently. As an adult, he never missed a season as a Friend of the Faire. Whether wandering the grounds or talking to the swordsmiths, actors, or patrons you were bound to run into him. He loved everything about Scarborough - the sense of community, the acting, the artisans, the costumes, and more. It was a welcoming place where you could be yourself.

Pat was famous for desserts but could cook anything. His lemon meringue pie, pineapple upside down cake, and date bars were enjoyed by everyone. No holiday was complete without Patrick and his sweets. He loved to travel, and enjoyed planning both cross-country road trips and visits afar to places like Bali and Singapore.

Patrick was a kind, generous, and thoughtful man. He had a lot of love in him for everyone near and dear to him. He was always there with a helping hand or good advice when you needed it.

We will greatly miss his beautiful, unique, booming, hearty laugh. His life was cut short, but we are grateful for the time we had with him. We are proud to be his family and humbled by the challenge of life without him.

The Interment of Ashes service for Patrick "Rethyn" Gregory Osbaldeston will be held on Monday February 3rd at 10am at Oak Grove Memorial Garden in Irving, TX. All are welcome.

The address is 1413 E Irving Blvd, Irving, TX 75060. Meal to follow, details will be shared after the service.

Patrick was an avid reader and a lifetime learner. In his honour, we have set up a scholarship fund in his name to support a burgeoning artist with their education through the Scarborough Renaissance Faire’s Scholarship Program. In lieu of flowers we request your donation to support this fund - https://www.freefunder.com/campaign/patrick-osbaldeston-fund

We will have a Celebration of Life memorial service at a later time, most likely at the end of March or early April. All are welcome and details to come.
