Turning Hardship In2 Hope

Father’s Fight: Turning Hardship into Hope and Craftsmanship

Imagine building a life, brick by brick, only to have it toppled overnight. As a father of two young children and a craftsman striving to rebuild after a life-altering medical battle, I invite you to hear my story—and perhaps become part of a journey that transforms adversity into artistry.

My Story:

At 46, I never imagined a single diagnosis could unravel everything I’d worked for. One year ago, I was hospitalized with neurological meningitis, enduring seven grueling days in a hospital bed and another 14 days tethered to a PICC line that fed penicillin directly to my heart. The treatment, though life-saving, unveiled a cruel twist: I was severely allergic to penicillin. Still, I sided with my doctors—the risk seemed worth the reward.

Yet the aftermath was a nightmare. I left the hospital unable to feel the bottoms of my feet, my legs swelled, and my body bore the warning signs of heart failure. Countless tests and second opinions confirmed what no one wanted to admit—something had gone wrong. Legal avenues for medical malpractice were closed, and my condition left me permanently disabled. My 20-plus years as a truck driver and worker in the construction and aerospace industries were gone in an instant.

My employer let me go, citing “voluntary quitting” due to my inability to work, leaving my family and me with no safety net. Searching for help, I quickly realized I didn’t fit the criteria for most assistance programs. As a 46-year-old male without stellar credit or special qualifications, the system had no place for me.

Finding Purpose in Craftsmanship

But lying down wasn’t an option—not for my family, not for my children. I channeled my energy into a lifelong passion: woodworking. I launched Father & Forest, a business rooted in salvaging historical trees destined for waste, transforming them into stunning live-edge furniture. Each piece I craft is more than functional—it’s a story. A century-old tree becomes a conversation piece, a memory brought back to life in your home.

From custom cutting boards to breathtaking epoxy river tables, every creation represents my journey of rehabilitation and resilience. This business isn’t just my therapy; it’s my hope. It’s the foundation upon which I’m rebuilding my life.

The Struggles of Starting Fresh

Starting a business from scratch has been both rewarding and grueling. Eight months in, I sold my first table, and the joy was indescribable. Yet, as with most startups, financial hurdles loom large. Banks and grants are hesitant to back first-year businesses, and I’ve stretched every dollar to keep us afloat. The bills pile up, their bright red warnings a constant reminder of how close we are to the edge.

But I refuse to ask for a handout without giving something back. My work speaks for itself, and I’m offering a percentage off custom furniture pieces to those who contribute to our journey. Whether it’s a coffee table, an executive desk, or a one-of-a-kind cutting board, your support helps my family while bringing a piece of craftsmanship into your home.

Join the Journey

I’m not just asking for help—I’m offering an opportunity to be part of a story of resilience, creativity, and hope. Visit Father & Forest to see my work, learn more about our journey, and discover how your support can make a difference.

Every contribution, whether a donation or a commission, is a step toward stability for my family and the growth of a business rooted in passion and perseverance. Together, we can turn adversity into artistry, crafting not only furniture but a future.

Closing Note:

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. It’s not easy to lay one’s struggles bare, but I believe in the power of community, compassion, and creativity. If my story resonates with you, I invite you to join me in building something beautiful—one table, one story, one step at a time.Any and All donations are very much appreciated in seeking our goal. Be Blessed

Sincerely,

S. Hendrix
