A Future Morehouse Man

Terence Hughes, affectionately known as “Poppa,” is a distinguished senior at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, New York. He has maintained a 3.2 GPA while pursuing a rigorous academic program that includes honors coursework in English, French, Chemistry, and Geometry, as well as Advanced Placement studies in Music Theory, US History, and Geography. He also serves as Teaching Assistant of the B.L.M.H.S. Freshmen Band. His academic record reflects both discipline and a commitment to intellectual development.

An accomplished student-athlete, seventeen-year-old Terence is a dedicated member of the Bishop Loughlin Varsity Lacrosse team, where he has demonstrated leadership, perseverance, and teamwork. Terence is a member of several other Division A Lacrosse CHSAA and ULAX leagues in New York City. Beyond athletics, he serves as an Admissions and Institutional Advancement Ambassador at his school, representing Bishop Loughlin with professionalism, integrity, and pride.

Terence has made significant contributions to his community, particularly within the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Since 2023, he has completed over 400 hours of community service as a BASE participant with Bridge Street Development Corporation. His dedication to civic engagement is further evidenced by his internship with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office and his participation in the Protecting the East program, through which he supported initiatives focused on HIV/STI prevention, reproductive health education, and community outreach.

In addition to his service efforts, Terence remains committed to mentorship and youth development. He serves as a team coach and peer coordinator for the lacrosse team at his alma mater, Excellence Boys Charter School. He is also an active member of the Kappa League of Kings County, Brooklyn, where he continues to cultivate leadership skills and a strong sense of responsibility to his community.

Terence’s journey is marked by notable resilience. Born with a congenital heart condition, he underwent open-heart surgery at the age of fourteen while remaining actively engaged in athletics. This experience underscores his strength, determination, and unwavering perseverance.

In recognition of his academic achievements and character, Terence has been accepted to Morehouse College as a member of the Class of 2030. He intends to pursue a degree in Political Science with an emphasis in Pre-Law, with aspirations of becoming a political leader and advocate for justice and community empowerment.

Terence has been fortunate to receive several scholarship opportunities in support of his educational journey. However, as he prepares to matriculate, additional financial support will help bridge the remaining gap. Contributions of any amount are sincerely appreciated and will directly support his continued academic success and future endeavors.
