A Giant Bike for Uttam

I'm raising funds for Uttam, a 9-year-old Nepali boy I met while traveling in Nepal. My friend and I were looking to get henna tattoo from a shop across the street from our hotel in Pakora, where Uttam's family offers haircut, henna and massage services. Uttam rode his bike to lead us down the street to his parents so we could get our questions answered. While I was getting henna painted, Uttam showed me his drawings and I got to know him and his siblings a lot more, and see more of his creativity and personality.

Later that evening when we went back to hotel, we saw Uttam riding his bike again while his father stood by looking out for him. His father taught us Nepali phrases, and we also learned that Uttam just got his "new" bike. He painted it from red to black and even added a Giant logo to make it feel cooler and more like his own. That detail stayed with me. He is currently sharing the bike with his family, but it's clear how much he enjoys riding and how proud he is making the most of what he has.

I grew up in China in the 80s and I still remember how meaningful it was to get my brand new bike when I was his age. It was a big moment in my childhood, and seeing Uttam's dream expressed through the used bike moved me deeply. My friend and I were brought to tears that evening, and the next day. It was a reminder of how fortunate many of us are, and it made me want to do something tangible for this child.

The funds from this fundraiser will go toward getting Uttam a real Giant bike. My hope is that receiving this bike while he is still young will help him build confidence, encourage him to keep working hard toward future drams, and remind him that bigger possibilities are within reach. If this story touches you, please consider donating or sharing this fundraiser. Any support would help Uttam realizing his dream.
