ABA Therapy for Jack

Friends and Family:

As you know Jack is on the autism spectrum and is 10 years old.  We have been lucky that he is able to receive services for ABA and speech therapy at school.  ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)  is a type of therapy that focuses on improving specific behaviors, such as social skills, communication, reading, and academics as well as adaptive learning skills, such as fine motor dexterity, hygiene, grooming, domestic capabilities, punctuality, and job competence. ABA is effective for children and adults with psychological disorders in a variety of settings, including schools, workplaces, homes, and clinics. It has also been shown that consistent ABA can significantly improve behaviors and skills and decrease the need for special services.

Currently the options to receive ABA outside of school are very slim.  Jack receives TEFRA insurance through the state of South Carolina which is for any child with a disability.  Although this is supposed to be a positive thing for children who need additional services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and ABA, it works against hundreds of parents.  South Carolina has the lowest reimbursement rate for organizations providing these services.  Because of this, providers either don't accept TEFRA or have to put children on a 1.5-2 year wait list because the funding doesn't allow them to stay afloat.

Jack could be put on my private plan of Blue Cross Blue Shield, but this insurance does not offer good coverage for ABA therapy and I haven't found a provider who even accepts Blue Cross.

After research and several conversations, Jack has an option to work with Stacey Sherman who runs ABA  Autism Services of SC.  She also has a son on the spectrum so her work is that much more meaningful.  The rates for therapy are $125 per session and children are receiving 6-8 hours a month of sessions.  The sessions do not include the initial assessment fee which is $679.00

Jack receiving these services for a minimum of one year would costs around $10,000.00.  Because Jack is on a 1-2 year wait-list to receive FREE services through his insurance, I am asking for your help in the interim.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated and has the potential to significantly improve his quality of life.  The ultimate goal is for Jack to be independent and function as an independent adult in society and have the same opportunities as his peers.  ABA therapy is one of the most beneficial and successful therapies for children/adults on the autism spectrum.  Thank you for taking the time to read about this need in his life.

With love,

Amber & Jack
