Abused Dads Fight For Kid
Hi, my name is Joel, and I’m reaching out with a humble heart as I work to rebuild my life after surviving nearly 13 years of emotional and psychological abuse. I fell deeply in love and started a family with someone I later realized was suffering from covert narcissistic personality disorder. It took years—and the onset of my own PTSD symptoms—for me to recognize the emotional manipulation I had endured. Through therapy, I came to understand that what I had experienced was abuse, hidden beneath years of gaslighting, control, and psychological games. A lot of folks don't know about Covert NPD. This is a brief rundown of the damage they can cause in a long term relationship/marriage. Someone who’s been in a long-term relationship with a person with covert narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) can be deeply traumatic and life-altering. Here's a breakdown of what that might look like:
Emotional and Psychological Impact
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD): Years of gaslighting, silent treatment, passive-aggressive manipulation, and emotional invalidation can leave the partner with severe trauma symptoms—hypervigilance, emotional flashbacks, identity confusion, insomnia, and chronic anxiety. Loss of Self-Identity: The victim may no longer recognize who they are. They often sacrifice personal goals, relationships, and values in the name of keeping the narcissist happy or avoiding conflict.
Chronic Guilt and Self-Doubt:
The covert narcissist subtly undermines their partner’s confidence over time—questioning their memory, judgment, or even sanity. Victims often feel like everything is their fault, even when logically they know it isn't.
Social and Relational Isolation Alienation from Friends and Family:
The covert narcissist may manipulate situations to make the partner seem unstable or unreasonable, causing others to distance themselves. Victims often end up isolated, dependent, and without a support network. Enmeshment: The narcissist may create an unhealthy dynamic where the partner’s needs, identity, and emotions are entirely wrapped around the narcissist’s approval or validation, making leaving feel nearly impossible.
Practical and Economic Fallout Financial Ruin or Dependency: Many covert narcissists create control through financial means—restricting access to funds, sabotaging careers, or ensuring the partner can’t leave without significant economic consequences. Legal Battles and Custody Nightmares:
If children are involved, the narcissist may use them as weapons—lying in court, manipulating professionals, or dragging out custody cases to maintain control and punish the partner.
Long-Term Consequences Physical Health Problems: Chronic stress can lead to migraines, autoimmune disorders, gastrointestinal problems, adrenal fatigue, and more.
Difficulty Trusting Others or Re-Entering Relationships: Victims may develop avoidant attachment styles or fear intimacy altogether, fearing future manipulation or betrayal.
Repetition of Trauma Bonds: Without therapy or awareness, the victim might unconsciously seek out similar partners, continuing the cycle of abuse.
Recovery Challenges Gaslighting Legacy: Even after leaving, the victim may replay the narcissist’s r in their head—questioning if the abuse was real, or if they’re “the problem.
Lack of Validation: Covert abuse is often invisible. Friends, family, or even e may struggle to understand the severity, making it hard for the survivor to feel believed or supported.
As an empath, I had always seen the best in people. My optimism and loyalty became the very things that were used against me. When I finally confronted my ex in hopes of getting her help, it triggered a slow but deliberate unraveling of my life. Ironically, my compassion gave her the perfect tools to dismantle everything I held dear. She weaponized my love and used it to isolate and break me. What I’ve lost materially doesn’t matter to me. I've never chased wealth or possessions. But what breaks my heart is the separation from my 12-year-old daughter, who has been my sidekick and best friend since the day she was born. Her mother’s long-standing emotional absence brought us closer in a way only we could understand. I’ve always put my family first—coming home after long hours as a chef, never missing a moment, always showing up. For years, I sacrificed everything—starting a small business and leaving my chef career so my ex could care for her terminally ill mother. I believed love meant doing whatever it took to support your partner. Unfortunately, my efforts were never met with the same dedication. The emotional abuse escalated in subtle but destructive ways: I was humiliated on special occasions, pushed away during moments of vulnerability, and slowly cut off from my career, community, and self-worth. Today, I am without stable housing, often sleeping in a tent or, when I can, a cheap hotel. My daughter currently lives part-time with extended family, including her mother, in a situation she is desperate to leave. I am doing everything I can to change that. Here’s how you can help: I’ve recently moved to a new city to access public transportation and job opportunities. With your support, I can secure stable housing and take the first step toward reuniting with my daughter. Your donation will go directly toward: First month’s rent and security deposit Transportation and basic essentials Legal fees to help bring my daughter home I have undeniable proof to back up my story. While I’m far from perfect, I ended up here because I believed in love and refused to give up on someone I cared deeply for—even when all the evidence said I should. That’s where I take responsibility. I chose to believe in words over actions, and that mistake cost me everything. But through it all, I’ve found my voice again. I know who I am now. And I believe, for the first time in my life, that God is real—and that He has a plan for me and my daughter. I’m finally ready to fight—for myself, and for her. With a little help, I know how this story ends: with us together, safe, and healing. Thank you for reading, for caring, and for standing with us. —Joel
