Since May of 2021 I have been successfully completing an Alzheimer's walk in honour of My Grandpa Mel Hinds.

He was born in 1936 and was predeceased by his Mother my Great Grandma Zella who also suffered from this “Long Good Bye”.

Mel had a knack for writing, he started a career in journalism at the Lethbridge Herald later moving his family to work for the Winnipeg Free Press before coming to Regina to work for the Leader Post. In 1974 Mel started with the Provincial Government as their Communications Director.  

Mel & my Grandma Sophie built a home and retired to Regina Beach in 1986 where they would join many clubs and take part in many volunteer activities. He was Mr congenitally, quick wit and funny.  Mel was an outdoorsman. He loved golf, X-country skiing, hunting, landscaping as well as exercising at the Y. 

Slowly this terrible decease took these things from him. He no longer knew simple and basic things he had know his whole life, as it progress of course it got worse. His mind weakened and eventually the man we saw was Grandpa. The shell but his mind had being taken away by the Dementia Monster.

Never losing the sparkle in his eye my Grandpa luckly never forgot his love for children, music, reading and the beauty of nature.

I have a good chance of Alzheimer's/Dementia affecting me and others in my immediate and close family and for that I will forever fight for what I can to find a way to stop these Long Good Byes and allow memories to live long with everyone.
