The Athens News and the Athens Messenger are run by people who don't live in Athens County, who don't know or care about our communities. Southeast Ohio deserves better. We want to create a nonprofit organization to support a truly local and independent news source that puts the people of Athens County first. The best journalism comes from people who are personally invested in the community — and who understand that journalism's first priority is the truth, not the company's public image.
