Help the Bawa Family Heal After a Year of Medical Crisis

Late last year, Shawn Bawa’s wife experienced a sudden collapse due to an atrial septal defect (ASD)—a congenital condition involving a hole in the wall between the heart’s upper chambers. She was resuscitated and rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered a second life-threatening complication: bowel necrosis caused by intestinal ischemia, meaning parts of her intestines had died due to lack of blood flow. Emergency surgery was required to remove the damaged tissue.

Because of the severity of her condition, doctors had to delay repairing her heart until her body could recover. After nearly a year of healing and uncertainty, she recently underwent successful open-heart surgery to correct the ASD. While the procedure went well, the journey has taken a tremendous emotional and financial toll on the Bawa family.

Shawn and his wife are the devoted parents of four children. Throughout this ordeal, Shawn has been the family's anchor—juggling caregiving, work, and parenting while navigating hospital stays, surgeries, and recovery setbacks. The family has endured unimaginable stress, and now they face mounting medical bills and ongoing recovery needs.
