Belted Cows Restoration
Thanks for taking the time to visit us on Freefunder.
Jonathan and I work to preserve and to restore the belted cow breeds ("Belties") on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Dutch Belted Lakenvelders are on the Critical List, and the Belted Galloways are on the Watch List.
We currently have a heifer and a bull, calves born this year, as well as a 2 year old heifer and four cows. Three of our cows are suspected to be currently pregnant. Two are currently "open," ready to breed.
We just completed permanent fencing on our nine acre property at the Hawaii Belted Cows Restoration Farm. This helps provide a more secure area for the cows.
Feed is very expensive on the island. And, we are working toward a barn for the cows. At some point, we will need to lease more farm land, on which the cows may graze.
We are also looking to raise funds for a barn and for a much needed tractor to supplement our efforts in land management.
Artificial insemination is also an expense, to provide excellent genetics and to assist in starting our herds here. Please help us in restoring these beautiful numbers and in preserving them on the island of Hawaii.
