It’s sort of funny how our lives can change in an instant. My life changed on March 21, 2025, when I experienced a freak accident and fell on some broken glass. The second I saw the palm of my right hand, I knew I had to go to the emergency room ASAP.

I’m a self-employed ‘cleaning lady’ living in the Les Cheneaux islands area near Cedarville, MI and after exclaiming some expletives and calling for my husband, I looked at my hand and cried “This is my cleaning hand!”. Because I’m right-handed, I use (used) it for way more than cleaning. Now that I can barely use it at all…I’m realizing how much I depended on it to comfortably live….and make a living.

Because of its large, ragged size, the wound only received three stitches. The surgeon ‘put it back together’ and left it to heal from the inside out using the help of my innate healing abilities and lots of time. It’s been over a month since the accident and I’m healing well…but still have a long way to go before I can use my right hand for any cleaning work, (or gardening, or doing dishes, or slicing things with a knife, or pulling up my pants, or myriad simple and complex tasks). (see photo above)

I’m reaching out to you for assistance in paying the various bills that accrue when someone visits the emergency room in two hospitals, gets minor hand surgery, has many follow-up visits and is out of work for a while. There may even be more hand surgery because of the interior damage to my muscles and tendons, but I won’t know for a couple of weeks when I see the specialist again.

I don’t have insurance, but have applied for some financial aid through the state and hospital systems. I can work a little bit, but I use my left hand for everything and it creates extra strain on my body, so I’ve greatly reduced my load for the unforeseeable future. Eric, my sweet husband, is working and that alone is helping keep us afloat so far, but the big bills are arriving.
