My dad, Bill Stodghill, was transported from Guymon to Amarillo on Monday, December 31, after suffering from what was believed to be a heart attack. After several tests and scans, it was determined that his heart is very strong for a 76 year old man and that he had not had a heart attack. They did find a bacterial infection in his blood (sepsis) and started antibiotics immediately as this can be life threatening. They have since discovered that he also has a staph (staphylococcus aureus) infection in his bones. He also has pus pockets of infection throughout his body. There are three or four that are causing more concern than the rest and may require surgery. They are located on his right knee, right elbow, collarbone, and in the tissue of his neck just in front of his spinal cord. These infections will require 6 weeks of IV antibiotic treatment so he will be in Amarillo, possibly in the hospital, the entire time. If they can find a rehabilitation center or hospice for him after his surgery, they will place him there for the rest of his IV treatment. There is no guarantee on that as his insurance may not cover it. They have done several CT scans and attempted a number of MRIs to get the images needed to determine what all he needs done while in the OR. Right now, they know he needs his right knee to be opened up and flushed. The same needs to happen with the collarbone area. They believe his right rotator cuff is damaged and in need of repair but haven't gotten a good clear image of it as he keeps moving while in the MRI machine. The same goes for the abscess in his neck. They will attempt another set of MRIs on Monday, January 7, 2019, with heavier sedation in hopes of getting the images they need before putting him completely under for the MRIs. From there they will schedule his surgery and get him started on recovery from that. He appears to be on the road to healing and getting better, but, like everything else in life, he can take a turn for the worst at any moment until these infections are completely cleared. He has a long road of recovery ahead and will have an expensive stay in Amarillo. As most older adults, he doesn't have the greatest of insurance because it costs too much so I am asking for any help with alleviating the costs associated with this hospital stay. He is generating roughly $3000/day in debt with only about half of that being covered by insurance just for the hospital stay. This doesn't include what the procedures (CT scans, MRIs, surgery,etc) are/will cost. Not to mention the other out of pocket expenses of his wife traveling back and forth from Guymon to Amarillo and vice versa to take care of their other bills and make sure things at home are taken care of.
