Building a digital bridge

Our Challenge: When Safety Stops Learning

Help us build a Technology Center at Tembaletu Active Learning Center. We need to connect our adults with disabilities to online skills training, remote social workers, and the global economy. Safety issues shouldn't stop learning. #TembaletuTech #DigitalInclusion #Gugulethu

Molweni, I am Thembile Gcukumeni.

At the Tembaletu Active Learning Center in Gugulethu, we are building a sanctuary where adults with disabilities find purpose through work—farming, baking, and sewing. But we face a harsh reality: Isolation.

We have incredible partners and experts who want to help us—agronomists who can teach us about soil, chefs who can teach us recipes, and therapists who can aid our healing. But too often, safety concerns in our area prevent them from visiting us physically.

Our beneficiaries are eager to learn, but they are cut off. We have the soil, the ovens, and the sewing machines. What we are missing is the knowledge.

The Solution: The "Mobile Expert" & Tech Center

We are raising funds to build a Technology Center that doesn't just sit in a room—it moves. We want to bring the world to Tembaletu through a "Mobile Teleconferencing Cart" and online learning stations.

We are not asking for high-tech gadgets for fun. We are asking for tools that enable every other part of our work:

  1. In the Micro Farm: A tablet on a mobile stand allows an expert agronomist in Stellenbosch to see our spinach leaves via video call and teach our wheelchair-bound farmers how to treat pests—without the expert needing to travel into the township.
  2. In the Food Lab: Our bakers can access free YouTube tutorials, recipes, and "AI chefs" to learn how to turn our surplus peppers into shelf-stable chili sauce.
  3. In the Maker Studio: Our sewers can download free patterns and learn new embroidery techniques from global creators, turning our fabric scraps into sellable art.
  4. For the Soul: Most critically, this tech allows us to bring in a "Virtual Social Worker". If we cannot afford a full-time therapist on-site, a secure, private video connection allows our beneficiaries to get the counseling and support they desperately need.

Our Goal: R150,000 for a Connected Future

We need to turn our "Active Learning Center" into a "Connected Learning Center." Your donation buys the tools that break down our walls.

  • R500 ($28): Buys Data Bundles for one month, keeping our farm and kitchen connected to online tutorials.
  • R2,500 ($140): Buys a rugged Tablet that can survive the dusty environment of the farm or the flour of the bakery.
  • R15,000 ($850): Buys the "Mobile Expert Cart"—a rolling station with a screen, camera, and battery backup (UPS) that can be wheeled to where the work is happening, allowing live streaming with remote mentors.
  • R50,000 ($2,800): Helps us install secure Wi-Fi infrastructure across the property so the signal reaches the garden beds and the sewing room.

Why This Matters

In the 21st century, digital access is as important as a wheelchair ramp. It is the tool that levels the playing field.

By funding this Technology Center, you aren't just buying screens. You are buying access. You are giving a woman in Gugulethu the ability to ask an AI for a business plan, watch a masterclass on sewing, or speak to a counselor who cares.

Help us bring the world to Tembaletu.

Enkosi kakhulu (Thank you very much).
