My name is Jabir, I am Deaf and 26 years old. Every day feels like a careful act between resilience and exhaustion. Living as a deaf person in a world that rarely slows down or listens has taught me strength, but it has also placed barriers even in simple things. Communication is never effortless. My greatest challenge is repairing my vehicle after dealing with 3 shady mechanics that ended up draining over $10,000 out my wallet leaving myself in a financial challenge that I am struggling to get out of. My vehicle is not just a convenience, it is my lifeline. It gets me to work, to audiologist appointments, and doctor visits. Without it I am isolated in ways that go beyond inconvenience. Rideshare services are not always affordable for someone in my position. my car repair bill is $1,700 and it is fixed and ready for me to pick it up. I am not asking for luxury or comfort, I am asking for the ability to keep moving forward. The cost is more than I can manage with my current income, especially while handling monthly/everyday expenses like rent, food, hearing equipment, and medical needs. As someone who already faces employment barriers due to being deaf like not being able to work at customer-based jobs like waffle house or family dollar which is a 15 min walk. I have worked hard to build independence despite the odds. I have adapted, learned, and pushed myself to survive in environments that were not designed for me. But moments like this remind me how quickly everything can unravel. Without my car i risk homelessness not being able to get back to my warehouse job. Asking for $1,700 is not easy for me. It carries vulnerability, humility but I'm not afraid to ask for help. I am asking for understanding and being deaf already means navigating a world that can feel isolating and unaccommodating. Receiving help would mean more than fixing a car, it would mean waking up without the constant weight of uncertainty pressing down on me. It would allow me to show up for my responsibilities, maintain my independence, and continue striving for a better future.
