Caring for the Caretaker
I am looking for help for someone who has helped me and hundreds of others, then has watched as his life fell apart. He is too proud to ask for anything and has no idea that I'm doing this. When he finds out, well, I'll deal with it.
A circle of friends who owe him more than we can ever repay are trying to give him a hand back up. The problem is none of us have money to help him.
He is over 60, owned businesses but suffered when the real estate market crashed. Then COVID hit and he cared for 8 families to help them through while also contracting COVID himself. At the end of the major COVID time, a drunk driver, without insurance, hit the electric pole next to his house, ripping the wires off the house. His policy refused to pay until 47,000 dollars in upgrades were done due to the age of the electrical system. He was only barely getting by because of all these set backs. The charity he ran for 12 years giving underprivileged families Christmas toys, food , and household items was shuttered. And of course he didn't tell anyone how bad things were getting.
Then people started breaking into his house, over and over - all middle aged white men. Several of them acted as if it was ok, as they assumed the house was abandoned due to the damage from the car.
While trying to secure his house, he fell ill with sepsis. He was hospitalized and hasn’t been the same. He lost all his belongings, his house, and lived in his car with his blind son, until he was able to secure a place for his son. Then his car broke down.
There’s much more that happened to him health wise, but the fact that I'm doing this is going to be difficult enough for him to swallow.
This man, who spent 12 years in the marine corps, spent his life helping others, fighting for others rights, as well as giving Christmas to thousands of families is broken and destitute. He needs a car, and a house or apartment for at least a year just to give him a chance to get better, along with furnishings, etc. It is ironic that the man who gave so many the gift of Christmas, hasn’t celebrated it for 4 years, not any holiday for that matter.
He lost his entire life through no fault of his own. The people who want to help him, sadly, have no money to give.
I'm hoping that crowdfunding can be used to reach out and help.
This man, if given the chance, would affect his part of the country in a very short time. I have personally been involved in many of his projects and know the impact he has when he fighting for others. Unfortunately, like many of us, he isn't as good at taking care of himself and tends to put everyone else's needs before his own. He says that to serve is the greatest gift we have, to ourselves. I say that when we take care of one another, everyone ends up taken care of.
I wish I was able to help him. For those who believe in taking care of our own. Can you help me, help him? Please?
Hopefully this is still the country I grew up loving, where we help those who are in need, especially those who have helped us. I hope it isn’t the ugly place that turns a blind eye to a good man who has been crippled by horrible circumstances.
Thank you so much. If you can’t send money please pray for him, send healing thoughts, and/or share this with friends. It won’t necessarily pay a bill, but maybe it will reach him when he feels life has no meaning anymore. We all need someone to lean on.
