My husband & I have created this fundraiser to help the Caviness family during an unbelievably difficult time in their lives.

In February of 2024 Dwayne Caviness started experiencing sudden back pain that was continually worsening. He made a doctors appointment and it was concluded, at the time, that he was dealing with a degenerative disc. They did a nerve block on one side of his lower back, and he was scheduled to go back 2 weeks later to have a second nerve block done on the opposite side. However, the following week while he was at work, he sneezed and the pain became unbearable. He called the doctor and told them that there was clearly something else going on. The doctor told him to go to the hospital & have an MRI done. From here, they not only found that he had crushed a vertebrae when he sneezed, but that he was also suffering from Multiple Myeloma. There was a tumor sitting on his spine, and it was eating through it.

In June of 2024, Dwayne had surgery to have rods and pins placed, building him a new vertebrae. He was in Forsyth Hospital for 7 weeks. On July 3, 2024 he was moved from the hospital to a rehab facility for 4 weeks in order to learn to walk again. Only two days later, on July 5, 2024, he and his wife, Teresa, got the unexpected & heartbreaking news that their 21 year old daughter had passed away. Their daughter left behind a 1 year old daughter of her own, that is now their sudden blessing to raise.

From July of 2024, to January of 2025, Dwayne went once a week to do Chemotherapy. In January he received a heavy round of Chemo and a stem cell replacement. He was in the hospital this time until February 14th.

After this release he continued to complain, this time specifically of lower back pain and numbness that radiated all the way down to his feet. He was scheduled for another MRI & CT scan. Two weeks ago they got the results back that he now has a tumor on the lower part of his spine. They're still waiting to hear details in regards to whether this tumor is benign or malignant.

It's hard enough to imagine receiving the news of losing a child, or finding out that you have cancer. However, dealing with both of these scenarios within only a few months of each other, is enough to bring anyone to their knees. Having medical bills pile up during a time when you should be concerned with nothing other than grieving the loss of your child, is an insanely heavy burden to bear. Dwayne is unable to work, considering the circumstances, and while Teresa is currently working at the Asheboro Sherriff's Office, her income alone is nowhere near the amount of medical debt that has been incurred over the last 13 months.

Our hope is that our community can come together and help relieve at least a small amount of the weight that this family is carrying.
