When I was first diagnosed with thalassemia, it was a shock. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body does not make enough hemoglobin, a red blood cell protein that carries oxygen to all the cells of the body. When there isn't enough hemoglobin, the body doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood. This causes a condition called anemia. Severe anemia can damage organs and lead to death.

My hemoglobin levels are very low—about half of what it should be. Low hemoglobin causes symptoms that interfere with daily life. I have recently been diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF). CHF sometimes occurs in people who have anemia for a long time, because their hearts need to work much harder to make up for the lack of oxygen in the blood. Thalassemia exasperates the CHF, so I will require ongoing medical treatment, including regular blood transfusions.

Due to the frequency of my appointments, I may need to quit my job to focus on my health and manage my condition. This has left me in a difficult financial situation, as medical expenses are mounting.
