Dave Newman - Battling ALS
In April of 2017, Dave Newman, father of Kris, Trevor, Brooke, Morgan, Zachary and beloved husband of Jennifer, was diagnosed with ALS and his world changed forever. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, progressively affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The death of motor neurons impacts the control of voluntary muscles. It is characterized by having stiff muscles, muscle twitching and gradually worsening weakness due to the failing of the body's muscle system. Dave was diagnosed with Bulbar onset ALS which is the most aggressive form of the disease. There is currently no treatment or cure for this debilitating disease and ultimately leads to complete paralysis. Individuals diagnosed with ALS in Dave's age group typically see a life expectancy of 2-5 years.
Dave's disease has progressed over the past year. Dave now requires breathing assistance at night and parts of the day. He is also now getting nutrients through a feeding tube to help maintain his weight.
How you can help:
This Freefunder campaign has been established by his friends and family to help Dave in his fight with ALS and improve his quality of life as his disease progresses. This campaign is focused on raising the funds needed to purchase a used van converted to have a ramp for wheelchair access, occasional in-home care, medical equipment needed as well as to assist with his expensive medications. This disease is devastating on a family emotionally, physically and financially.
