Deaf Tech Research 2025
We aim to conduct an online survey targeting the deaf community, American Sign Language (ASL) translators, and advocates to:
- Better understanding of the lived experience of the deaf community with technology
- Gather insights on people's feelings on the current state and future potential of Aritifical Intelligence (AI) to improve the lives of people in the deaf community
This pro bono research, which we seek to conduct, will raise the visibility of accessibility needs and equity issues in AI system design for an audience of user experience and digital product professionals.
We are not testing or endorsing any specific product or service. We are simply seeking to gather perspectives that will help shape a more inclusive and informed discussion. Our goal is to highlight AI's real-world challenges and opportunities for the deaf community, ensuring that accessibility considerations are prioritized in AI-driven experiences.
We are seeking funds to:
1) Translate our survey into American Sign Language
2) Compensate a deaf consultant to advise on our survey
3) Cover survey outreach costs
Any funds in excess of our direct expenses will be donated to Boston Public School's Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
