Emma’s Second Wave

Emma's Second Wave – Life-Saving Cancer Surgery Needed

Emma’s cancer has returned.

She’s not just my dog—she’s my heart, my emotional anchor, my studio sidekick, and a beloved presence in our critique group. She’s helped me through years of caregiving and grief. In one of her final lucid moments, my mother turned her head and blew a kiss—not to me, but to Emma.

Emma is also a marathon swimmer—she could paddle for hours, cutting through the water like it was her second home. Her love of swimming reflects her spirit: strong, steady, and full of life.

Emma’s Next Chapter: A Kinder Path Through Science and Hope

Thank you all so much for your ongoing support—your generosity and encouragement mean the world to me and Emma.

Recently, I had a consultation with The Pet Dentist clinic here in town, where I met with the incredibly empathetic and knowledgeable Dr. Waters. She walked me through the surgical option in far more detail than I’d previously been given. And I’ll be honest—it was brutal. The procedure would involve removing part of Emma’s upper jaw, with many risks and complications. I knew in my heart I couldn’t put Emma through that.

But during that same conversation, Dr. Waters and I discussed an alternative: a promising clinical trial at the University of Florida. The trial is focused on the development of a new melanoma vaccine—one that could not only help Emma, but also contribute to future treatment and prevention for countless dogs facing this devastating disease.

The vaccine consists of two parts: one that treats the tumor itself, and another that works systemically to help prevent metastasis. Today, I received the best possible news—Emma is a perfect candidate. We begin the trial next week.

This is Emma’s kindest, most hopeful option. While it’s less invasive than surgery, it still comes with significant costs—over $4,000 in ongoing exams, tests, x-rays, and frequent progress monitoring.

If not for Emma, then for the love of science, compassion, and the many dogs who may one day benefit from this research—please consider helping us on this journey.

More updates soon. With deep gratitude,
