Escape to NWA — Returning Home to Build Something That Lasts

We’re Darrin and Irma Surls, and for nine years, Northwest Arkansas was home. It’s where we lived, worked, and built deep roots in the Ozarks. In 2021, circumstances required us to leave the area to regain stability, but our hearts never left. After five years of rebuilding, we’re now in a position to return home — not just to live, but to build something meaningful that gives back.

As a service-connected disabled U.S. Army veteran, I’ve learned that purpose, structure, and hands-on work can restore what life wears down. Together, we’re launching Escape to NWA, a veteran-led, community-focused teaching farm designed to grow food, skills, and resilience for families and fellow veterans.

What the Funds Will Be Used For

We are raising $600,000 to responsibly establish the foundation of Escape to NWA in Northwest Arkansas. Funds will be used for:

• Land acquisition (5–10 acres suitable for farming and education)
• Infrastructure including access road, utilities, water, septic, and fencing
• Farmstead construction (modest home, barn, workshop)
• Greenhouses and gardens for food production and teaching
• Livestock setup including shelters, pens, and fencing
• Education and workshop space for community and veteran programs
• Legal, insurance, and administrative costs
• First-year operating expenses to ensure stability and transparency

Every dollar raised will be tracked and used intentionally, with regular updates shared publicly.

Why We’re Raising Funds Now

We are actively preparing for land acquisition and need funding in place to move forward confidently and responsibly. The goal is to secure land and begin initial development within the next 3–6 months, allowing us to return home and start building in phases without taking on unnecessary debt.

Why This Matters

Escape to NWA is not about escaping responsibility — it’s about returning home with purpose. This project will provide a place where families and veterans can reconnect with the land, learn practical skills, and find peace through meaningful work. It’s a long-term vision rooted in service, stewardship, and community.

We’re not asking for charity.

We’re inviting partnership in something real, tangible, and lasting.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for considering support for Escape to NWA. Your generosity helps turn open ground into a place that will serve others for generations.
