Every Beat Matters
Fifteen years ago, I was given a diagnosis of congestive heart failure in a tiny medical office in Cedar Park Tx. Over the years, I was able to manage my chronic illness with medication. Medications on their own became inefficient to the task, so I underwent surgery, and an ICD Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator device was installed in my chest. As time went on, my condition worsened. The medications changed, and this, along with the ICD, was enough to keep me going. Then one day, I went from seeing one cardiologist to joining a heart failure clinic, with multiple Cardiologists all working on my case. After a few years, I was told that my only option left for survival was an LVAD, Left Ventricular Assist Device, which is a bridge to a Heart Transplant. After a large battery of tests and committee approval, I received an LVAD in 2019. The recovery period was long, but eventually I was able to come home.
Unfortunately, after a couple of years of extremely hard work, my LVAD drive line became infected, and in late 2022, I underwent surgery to replace my drive line. The extensive surgery and time it took resulted in me not waking up but falling into a coma. After three months, I woke up, but not without other problems. The coma resulted in my kidneys shutting down and kidney disease. I also lost the use of my legs. I am still undergoing physical therapy for them after two years, with the ultimate goal of walking again. My goal is to continue getting better and be eligible for a heart transplant. Now I desperately need your help with paying the copays for three new medications I have been prescribed. I’m well on my way to seeing my dream become a reality, but not without your help.
