Family Stuck in Crisis
In 2022, the McKinney forest fire hit 3 miles from our house. My fiancée, 2 boys (1 & 5) and myself (2 months pregnant) were forced to evacuate and given only 30 minutes to gather our belongings. In a rush my fiancée got up on the roof to screw down a sprinkler and on the way down slipped off the ladder on to his back, he was not ok, but as most stubborn hard working men are he fought through the pain to get his family to saftey. We were evacuated for 2 weeks and when evacuations were lifted and we returned home there was ash covering everything and everything inside had smoke damage. Little by little we had to replace everything in our home from the entire floors to curtians, beds wash and repaint the walls to furniture to all our childerns stuffed animals and toys that were left behind. We had little money as we both were off work for 2 weeks. I developed preclampsia and was put on bed rest from the stress. My fiancées type 2 diabetes started getting out of hand from his back injury not getting addressed, and started taking time off from our business, (Biggs Mobile Blasting). Our water bill from from 2 weeks of 2 sprinklers on 24/7 climbed over $1000. We had a claim in the lawsuit but it was taking forever and shut off notices began to take over. We had received a check for $5000 from a presettlement funding company to keep our utilities and car payments up. But it wasn't enough, bills kept climbing and we started to really struggle but we knew it would be ok soon because the settlement was going to go through eventually... Due to having children involved our case went through allication. Out of desperation, we took a hard money loan with the lien out on our house for $75,000, with a payoff date set for Aug 17, 2026. With expectation to pay it off when our checks came available. 2025 was when our checks were ready. We were so excited to finally get caught up, $85,000!..... nope..... $6382.00.... that was it! The presettlement funding company took it ALL in interest!! Our lawyers had our checks for 2 years but couldn't release them because the alocation part of our case involving our children hadn't gone through yet. They did not pay the presettlement funding company anything until our checks were released to us in 2025. He said, we're sorry, there's nothing we can do, "You signed the agreement with the presettlement company." Which, yes, we did, but we were not expecting the allocation part of our case to take so long, let alone expect our lawyers not to pay them until it went through regardless that they had our checks... We applied for loan after loan, but shut off notices became no water, no power, my fiancées health worse and worse disability lawyers still fighting for us. But our time is past our balloon payment was due Aug 17th 2026, and now we are facing foreclosure...we cant catch a break... the banks took back our cars, the power is only on because my fiancées health allows it to be on. The church paid our water but will be off again by next monday...and now our house, the house I grew up in the only security we had is about to be gone. We are doing everything and just getting knocked down. If there is anyway there is ANYONE willing to help us. I swear it will come back to you, one conversation with us you will understand how it will!! We just need a life vest to get us out of this whirlpool.
