Our friend José is the kind of person whose presence fills a room - his wide, toothy smile and sparkling eyes instantly put others at ease. He has always been the one who shows up for others with generosity, warmth, and quiet strength. Today, José and his family are facing an unthinkable reality.

On January 8, 2026, after weeks of intense back pain that made even the simplest moments difficult, José received devastating news: he had been diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer of the parotid (salivary) gland. Even more alarming, the cancer has already metastasized to his spine. A rare cancer combined with bone metastasis brings a serious and uncertain prognosis, and the road ahead will be long, physically demanding, and emotionally exhausting.

For the past twenty years, José and his wife, Marianela, have devoted their lives to raising their two incredible sons - young men who are now finishing high school and navigating college. At this pivotal moment in their lives, they need their father more than ever. José wants nothing more than to be there to guide and support them and to witness the milestones that lie ahead. But right now, his focus must be on fighting for his life.

José has always lived with discipline and intention, prioritizing exercise, nutrition, and his health. His strength and resilience give him a fighting chance - but cancer does not only attack the body. Treatment will require frequent travel between Bloomington and Chicago, ongoing medical care, and physical recovery that may prevent José from working for an extended period. As his ability to work becomes uncertain, the financial strain on his family is growing rapidly. Medical bills, travel expenses, and daily living costs are becoming overwhelming, especially with limited insurance coverage.
