Help fund my graduate studies in Finland!!

I was recently accepted for Master's studies at The Academy of the Arts (or Uniarts) in Helsinki, Finland. I will be pursuing my degree in Space and Time Arts.

From the program description: "The subject area of Time and Space Arts provides instruction in site and situation-specific art, moving image and photography. The teaching focuses on various aspects of artistic work, including the conceptual, pictorial, spatial and bodily dimensions of art."

I am very excited for this opportunity to develop my art practice within this niche-fitting program; I'm also excited to dwell in a country well-suited to my affinities for nature and winter.

In order to enter the country and be granted a residence permit, I am required to have sufficient funds to live on for the duration of the two-year program. In general, moving to another country and starting over is a big expense. So far, I've managed to save $10,000 and now I have an additional $5,000 in scholarship that was awarded with my acceptance! I'm only $5,000 away from my $20,000 goal!

I am hoping to fly out the end December for the semester that starts January 7th. This doesn't leave much time! Will you help me close this gap before I start school?

Here are the major items in my budget:

  • Residence permit: $400
  • Plane ticket and bag fees: $700
  • Rent: about $500-$600 a month
  • Food: estimating $250 a month (depending on how expensive food actually is over there!)
  • Art supplies: approx. $50 a month
  • Books: $100
  • Public transportation: $720
  • Winter gear (no joke, long winters): $900
  • Household misc (starting my life over): $300
