Giving voice to the silenced
#CRUISEFORKARMA is making an immeasurable impact and Karma's story is finding its way to places I never imagined! I (Crystal) can't find the words to express the gratitude I feel for the amazing support I have received!
I am reaching out to all of you again, because I need that same level of support, now more than ever.
Karmas story has made it to the Sarcoma Foundation of America, and led to them personally invite me to attend the 2019 Childhood Action Cancer Days in Washington, DC. I will be attending as a Childhood Cancer Advocate for Utah, a #WarriorMom, and a voice for all of our children currently fighting, or those that have fought this evil beast called #ChildhoodCancer.
My main goal will be personally sharing Karmas story with Congress to bring more awareness to childhood cancer, especially #Osteosarcoma. I want to give a face and a story to Osteosarcoma, and help Congress understand why we need funding for research and cures. Our current system is broken, and a 34 year old treatment protocol is taking our Warriors before their time. I know there is another way!
This is the single most important day for parents, patients, and advocates to share our stories and give voices to those that can't share theirs. Congress takes this information and decides how much of the National Treasury will be given to research and support for Childhood Cancer.
I have the passion to make a change, and will not stop until I keep my promise to Karma. Before she passed, she made me promise to raise awareness for Osteosarcoma and other childhood cancers. Karma did not want anyone to suffer and once told me
"Mom, if I could take the pain and cancer away from every child I would...even if that meant I would die every time...because I know the pain they are going through, and I do not want them to feel the pain I do everyday." As a parent hearing that rips your heart out, but it also provides me a cherished memory of exactly what Karma was...my sassy and selfless little girl that loved beyond measure, and never gave up. On my hard days, I remember her and those words, and I refuse to give up. It pushes me to get out of bed, and find ways to spread awareness.
#CRUISEFORKARMA is one of those ways see video here. During the first Cruise for Karma (2018), a very special person came into my and Karma's life. She came with her furry and feathered friends from the Mascot Miracles Foundation,to find out more about the Mascots click this link. and let me know that #NoOneFightsAlone and after Karma passed that she will #NeverToBeForgotten. Her name is Amber Self.
Amber and I have created an amazing friendship, and continue to work together to help local cancer patients and families in need. We have sat together in hospital rooms while a child received Chemo...gathered clothes, blankets, and hygiene items for a Mother in an unthinkable situation...attended funerals...helped with a rock treasure hunt for a newly diagnosed warrior...sat in the emergency room with terrified parents... continually provide our support in chat groups, Facebook pages etc. It doesn't really matter what it is, we are there doing it together.
Because of this partnership, I would love to have Amber attend this event with me. Like Amber says, "we are the missing piece to each others puzzle". When we come together we complete the picture. Our strengths and weaknesses offset each other. We feed off of each others energy, and we push each other. Most importantly though, when we combine our passion to help we become unstoppable. I feel if both of us receive the advocacy training the Sarcoma foundation of Americais providing us, we will come back to Utah trained and ready to be unstoppable in our advocacy efforts.
This once in a lifetime opportunity does come with a cost though. We need to raise a total of $2,200 in less than a month. We have some of it, but this is not easy for us. This amount will cover round trip tickets, hotel stay, and food while we are there. We will leave March 25th and return March 28th.
Please help us share Karmas legacy, give our children a voice, and fight for funds for research and treatment!
After accidents, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14 . Please help us fight for the future of our children!

* In full disclosure, the National Sarcoma Foundation (? Is that right) offered us the ability to apply for a $500 scholarship to help with the upfront costs. We will find out if that was approved February 26th.
