Gloria Rolando in Philly

Kolektivo Sin Nombre is a collective of Afro-descendent and Latinx artists, organizers, and cultural activists based in Philadelphia who practice creative resistance against the US militarization and imperialism across the Caribbean. We create programming related to arts and culture that connects Havana, Cuba, and Port au Prince, Haiti with Philadelphia, learning from organizing, community building, and cultural practices across the Caribbean. Our goal is to remove barriers to shared development and reduce US militarization transnational dialogue between Afro-Cubans and Black Americans, continuing a long, historical arc of solidarity across African diasporas.

This February we are honored to host the renowned Cuban filmmaker, Gloria Rolando, in Philadelphia. We are working to coordinate 3 screenings of Gloria’s films from February 21-28. We are seeking support to help cover costs such as Gloria’s transportation in Philly as well as refreshments for the screenings, so that we can offer these screenings as free events to the public.

Gloria Rolando is a Cuban filmmaker and screenwriter. Her career as a director spans more than 35 years at the Cuban national film institute, and she also heads Imágenes del Caribe, an independent film-making group. Her documentaries take as their subject matter the history of the African diaspora in the Caribbean, using filmmaking as a way to preserve culture and spiritual values. Her first documentary, Oggun: An Eternal Presence(1991), which paid homage to those who have preserved the African Yoruba religion in Cuba, won the Premio de la Popularidad at the Festival de Video Mujer e Imagen in Ecuador in 1994, and Rolando went on to make more than a dozen other documentaries, winning several other awards.
