Hello, my name is Shannon Vieths, and I’m the best friend of Samantha Hensley (Jobe). Sam is like a sister to me as we are childhood friends and our parents are friends.

After years of hoping and praying, Sam found out she was pregnant on February 19, 2025, at the age of 36 — a lifelong dream come true. Her original due date was October 27. Due to her high-risk pregnancy, Sam and her husband, Devin, chose to do genetic testing.

On May 20, they learned that their baby boy would be born with Down Syndrome. While the news came with challenges, it never changed their deep love and excitement to become parents. They knew in their hearts that God chose them for this beautiful journey.

On July 17, Sam was placed on permanent bed rest and had to leave work. A C-section was scheduled for October 13. However, during a routine appointment on October 7, Sam was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia, dangerously high blood pressure, and excess amniotic fluid. Doctors made the urgent decision to deliver early. That same day, at 5:16 PM, Jackson Bryce Hensley was born — 6 lbs 8 oz, 19 inches long — and transferred by air to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, over 3 hours from home. Jackson has a heart murmur and is unable to keep his oxygen up on his own.

Sam, still hospitalized at the University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, couldn’t fly with him due to unstable blood pressure. She can only see her baby via webcam until she’s well enough to travel.

To make things harder, Devin’s truck broke down the same day. He’s working to get it fixed so he can make the long drive to be by Jackson’s side. Devin has also taken a leave from work to care for his family.
