In March 2021, my husband Carter and I adopted Buffy from the Humane Society of Houston in Georgia. After years of dreaming about having a dog and months of searching for the perfect fit for our little family, I saw her—a fluffy, white ball of love being held like a baby in a photo—and it was love at first sight.

When we adopted Buffy, we were told she had a small mammary tumor that was removed during her spay surgery. The shelter didn’t send it for pathology, but we were assured it wasn’t a concern. For three wonderful years, we believed she was in perfect health.

That changed on January 3rd during her annual vet check-up. I noticed two small lumps on her stomach and asked the vet to take a closer look. The biopsy results were devastating: Buffy has carcinoma, an aggressive form of mammary cancer.

We acted immediately, scheduling X-rays, bloodwork, and surgery to remove the tumors. Thankfully, her lungs are clear, and her bloodwork looks good. On January 15th, Buffy underwent a major surgery, and while she’s recovering like the resilient pup she is, her prognosis is uncertain. Even with successful tumor removal, mammary cancer often recurs within 1–2 years.

Carter and I are determined to give Buffy the best possible chance. We’ve scheduled an appointment with an oncologist and are ready to explore treatments to extend her life and improve her quality of care.

Heartbreakingly, our pet insurance provider denied our claims, citing a “pre-existing condition” based on the tumor removed before her adoption—despite the lack of evidence it was malignant. This denial left us with over $3,500 in bills for the biopsy, X-rays, bloodwork, and surgery, with more expenses on the horizon for oncology visits and potential treatments.

Asking for help isn’t easy, but we are reaching out to friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers to help us give Buffy the care she needs. Any amount, even $1, would mean the world to us. Every dollar brings us closer to covering her medical expenses and giving Buffy the happy, love-filled days she deserves.
