Kelly and Ari's newborn son Shaw has been diagnosed with a very rare genetic disorder called Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome, which means he will need lifelong help with breathing. He has been staying at the Alberta Children's Hospital since the day of his birth (Feb. 15th), and Kelly and Ari have been staying in Calgary to care for him. While he is stable currently, there is a long road ahead...his hospitalization will last months though they have not been told how many. Kelly and Ari need extensive training to learn how to properly care for Shaw's trache (he had tracheostomy surgery on March 17th), and home care nursing has to be arranged for their transition back to Medicine Hat before they can be discharged (this piece often takes the longest to arrange). They are paying regular home expenses plus additional living expenses in the city during this time. While neither is bringing in their usual income, their financial strain is increasing. They have also been told that there will be monthly medical expenses for Shaw that could range from $250-$2000 a month that will not be covered, once discharged, and they will need to go to Calgary frequently for appointments. Any amount of help you might provide for them would be immensely appreciated as they navigate this challenging journey.
