Help Jojo Beat Cancer
I'm writing on behalf of my best friend, Jojo Diggs, to ask for your support. Jojo brings a contagious joy everywhere she goes and has poured her heart into multiple communities around the world for decades teaching, volunteering, organizing, advocating for social justice, and guiding others on their healing through dance and shadow work. Now it's time for us to show up for her.
In April 2026, Jojo found a lump in her breast. After several months of testing — two mammograms, two ultrasounds, a biopsy, and an MRI — she was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 7, 2026. There are two types present, invasive and ductal. It's currently in her right breast only, though her doctor found a cyst on the left that she's getting biopsied this week. Right now she's dealing with tiredness and occasional dizziness while still teaching dance, managing doctors appointments, and trying to plan for recovery after the mastectomy.
A little more about the surgery:
On Friday September 11, Jojo will have a double mastectomy flat closure (no reconstruction.) The surgery takes 4 to 6 hours, and while recovery time varies, it's usually 4 to 8 weeks. A mastectomy doesn't guarantee the cancer won't return, but it lowers the odds and helps testing. Jojo is considered very high risk at 23% (anything above 6% falls into the high-risk category.)
What your donation will cover:
Jojo is now insured but initially was not and was working with a Naturopathic Dr. The mastectomy WILL be covered under insurance but as you know our health care system is not the most supportive, and there are many other expenses along the way including uninsured expenses, need to provide others compensation, and more.
Specifically, your contribution goes towards:
• Mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and labworks that were out of pocket
• Multiple copays for doctor's visits
• An overnight hospital stay the day of surgery
• Paying people to cover rehearsals and classes
• Not having to rush back to work before she's ready
From Jojo:
"My doctors and I are feeling positive and very hopeful that we caught the cancer early! I have moments of being afraid, but I try to just come back to the present. I've been praying and meditating and speaking to her like she is a teacher. What I'm learning most is that I need to shift my focus away from what can go wrong to what is going right — and that everything is going right."
How to help:
Any amount helps. If you're not able to give, sharing this fundraiser is useful too!
