Help save Buddy

Hi, our names are Kayla and John, and we are looking for help with our medical fees for our eldest fur baby Buddy.

On Saturday July 1st, 2023 our beloved dog Buddy stopped eating and started throwing up. Since we had an appointment with our Vet on the Monday coming up, we decided to document and observe him so we could provide all details to our vet.

It's Monday morning, and our boy has not eaten and had continuously thrown up. At our vet appointment we advised our doctor of all the concerns we had. Our doctor advised that “normally” he would keep the dog over night, run some blood tests, flush him with fluids and provide antibiotics. However because he “knew” our dog he felt it would traumatize him and instead drew blood, asked us to get a urine sample and provided him with a round of fluids/antibiotics and sent him home to do a follow up the next morning with Buddy the next day. He did also explain that he was testing our dog with leptospirosis, as our dogs liver enzyme levels were 2000, and normal levels should be 100. There were no signs of improvement that day.

Tuesday we brought our dog back to the vet and explained there was no improvement. Our vet then proceeded to say we would require an ultrasound, he would provide him the fluid therapy he did yesterday and call us in the morning. He was concerned but instead of keeping him overnight for observation he felt that it would be too traumatic and we should bring him home and come back on Wednesday for a follow up. Again, there was no improvement with Buddy. This was 4 days of our dog not eating.

Wednesday we brought Buddy back to the vet. The test results have not come back for the leptospirosis but our ultrasounds looked good, his organs looked fine with no inflammation but now he was worried about a potential blockage in his stomach and we now required x-rays and further fluid treatments. We then got a a call in the afternoon that he wanted to see us and buddy for the second time that day. When we were at the vets office he explained that he wanted us to take barium beads and have our dog ingest them at home so Thursday we could have another X-ray in the morning and get the results in the afternoon to confirm the blockage was or wasn't there. With very little answers, going back and forth to the vets office and our dog becoming more scared and anxious we were hoping Thursday we would have answers and a better understanding of our next steps for our dog. This would be Day 5 and our baby still hasn't eaten and no signs of improvement.

Thursday morning we brought our scared and anxious dog back to the vet. He was crying before even entering the building. We tried to reassure him we were trying to help and that we should have answers today. When at the vet we got our second set of X-rays and we're told to come back at 4:30 to get the results. Back to the vet we go and we have no answers. X-rays came back fine, the barium beads proved that there was no blockage but the leptospirosis results still have not come back. He then advised that he believed our dog may have a different disease called coppers disease and that if he didn't have results by tomorrow we would have to see a specialist in Detroit, Michigan.

Frustrated and scared for our dog, we called a family friend who was a vet tech who told us to call another vet office in our City for a second opinion. We then called this Vet office they were appalled that our vet did not keep him for overnight observations and do all all the required tests and told us to come first thing Friday morning so they could take him for the day and do their own assessment.

The next morning we're off to this new Vet and they took our beloved Buddy for the morning and ran their own tests and examinations. We got a call around lunch time where they advised that since it was day 6 of our boy not eating he needed urgent care by a specialist and they then called Blue Pearl Hospital in Southfield, Michigan and advised them we would be bringing our dog there for urgent care. They wished they could have gotten Buddy earlier to do a proper diagnosis but unfortunately time was running out.

We then crossed the border and brought our dog to Blue Pearl Hospital where our boy is now staying and being observed by their doctors to get to the root of the problem. They were also in disbelief that our initial vet wouldn't have taken our dog the first day and do his observations overnight for fear of traumatizing our dog and he did the complete opposite as our dog is stressed and scared from the multiple visits.

The doctors at Blue Pearl Animal hospital have been great and been giving our boy the proper care he needs. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis but because proper protocol and blood work were not completed initially he is now not only fighting pancreatitis he also has pneumonia and is in an oxygen cage to try and improve his breathing. He is stable but if no improvement he will need a ventilator.

We are heart broken. We are devastated. We are traumatized. We just want our boy home. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
