Help Zuzu Recover!

On Wednesday, July 26th, sweet sweet Zuzu slipped out a door that was accidentally left open, was hit by a car, and left for dead by a driver.

She was brought to SAVES (the emergency vet), and it did not look good. She suffered from bruised lungs, a pneumothorax, impact to her liver, and serious injuries to both of her left legs. She spent just over 48 hours at SAVES, where they performed a thoracocentesis for the pneumothorax, got her on IV fluids and pain medications, and stabilized her. Once she hit the milestones of peeing, figuring out how to stand up, and eventually eating, she was allowed to go home.

Her left front leg has a brachial plexus injury — nerve damage that may or may not heal, though she is already showing major improvement — and her left hind leg has tears to two ligaments and requires surgery. She still has very elevated liver enzymes that are in line with severe trauma to both muscles and liver, and we are checking those levels every 5-7 days. Since coming home, Zuzu has been in great spirits and enjoying spending most of her day outside in her fenced-in yard, basking in the sun and laying on the grass.

On Tuesday, August 1, she was taken to Mass. Vet. Hospital for surgical and neurological consults for her two legs, primarily focused on the surgery for her hind leg. This surgery is more complicated than initially thought because the two ligaments' repairs have different needs for healing — one likes to be immobilized, the other to have movement in the joint — so the surgeons are conferring with one another and coming up with a plan.

Thankfully Zuzu is insured through Trupanion, or getting her the care she deserves would not even be an option because the cost is so prohibitive. But even with insurance, these bills are adding up — and there are more to come.

That's where we come in: Zuzu and her human, Jeanna, need our help to get through this tough time and make sure that Zuzu gets the right care to make sure she can live a long and happy life.

Currently, here are the expenses that insurance hasn't covered. We are fundraising for those costs, plus about $1k additional to start for Zuzu's upcoming surgeries.

Emergency vet: $822.87

Mass. Vet. consult: $636.81
