For more than 20 years, Chief Robert "Bob" Smith proudly served the City of Leslie as both a police officer and Chief of Police.

Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to protecting the community, responding to emergencies, and serving the people of Leslie with integrity, compassion, and commitment. Many residents know him not only as a law enforcement officer but as someone who was always willing to help, treat others with respect, and put the needs of the community before his own.

When Chief Bob retired in 2025, he did so without receiving a retirement pension. During most of his career, the city was unable to provide retirement benefits for law enforcement officers. Shortly after his retirement, a retirement plan was approved for future officers, meaning those hired after him would receive a benefit that simply came too late for his years of service.

This fundraiser is not about placing blame or criticizing anyone's decisions. It is about giving our community an opportunity to recognize and honor someone who devoted more than two decades to protecting our town.

I have always believed that retirement should be a time to enjoy the years you've worked so hard for a time to spend with family, pursue the things you love, and have the security to slow down after a lifetime of serving others. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the reality for Chief Bob. Even in retirement, he continues to carry responsibilities that many people hope retirement will finally ease.

This isn't a handout. It's a community coming together to say, "Thank you."
