Illinois Golden Retriever Resc
Larry was rescued from a hoarding situation. That was the good news; however, his plight was far from over. Once in a shelter, day after day, would-be adopters passed him by as he cowered in the corner of his kennel, trembling.
You see, Larry's experience before he was rescued was like that of a puppy mill survivor – devoid of human kindness and care. Larry had been viewed as little more than a “thing to be collected.” He didn't know kindness and certainly didn't associate people with love and care. His rescue was a positive first step, but he was still far from adoptable, and his future looked bleak.
However, the shelter where he landed knew about IGRR's Project Home Life program – a program in which our staff and volunteers work to transition puppy mill survivors and dogs like Larry from the horrific conditions they've endured to life in a typical household. The shelter asked if we'd take Larry, and we answered with a resounding, “Yes!”
In his first days, he stayed toward the rear of his kennel in the special care area of The Sanctuary for Senior Goldens and Puppy Mill Survivors at IGRR's Golden Gateway. Even crossing through a doorway to go outside was a huge challenge. Staff and volunteers allowed Larry to move at his own pace in adjusting to new surroundings. Other resident dogs living at the Sanctuary provided “mentor-ship” to Larry, teaching him how to live and act like a “regular” dog.
Once in this setting, it didn't take long for Larry to blossom… and once he did, he quickly landed in his adoptive home where he is thriving today. Thanks to generous supporters and campaigns like the Savings Pets Challenge, we have the resources needed to provide Larry and dogs like him time… time to come out of their shells, time to understand love and care, time to become adoptable family members.
With your help and generous support – plus creating your own page to fundraiser on our behalf during the Saving Pets Challenge – we can continue to rescue more dogs and help improve the chances for adoption for dogs like Larry. Learn more about IGRR and our Project Home Life Program
