PROGNOSIS
I was diagnosed with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) in 2001 following persistent bouts of chronic headaches and gout. In 2005 my doctors decided to remove one of my kidneys which was severely diseased in an effort to try and slow down the rate of deterioration of my kidney function, this helped abit until 2010 when the kidney function fell below 20% and the doctors felt that I needed a pre-emptive transplant as I could not function normally with kidneys below 20%.
I traveled to India in December 2010 and did a successful transplant and was back on my feet within 3 months. Things went smoothly until May 2011 when I lost my source of income and I could not afford the immune-suppressant medication which at the time was Kshs 60,000.00 Per Month. Without the medication my new kidney function deteriorated and I lost its function in November 2011, Thereafter I was put on dialysis. In April 2012 I developed an infection in my dialysis catheter which made me go into a comma for about two months.
Dialysis has been quite a strain not only financially, but also my family, relationships and life in general as I have to do two sessions per week. The strain has left me weak and has taken its toll on me. Now, I have developed a condition called Hyperthyroidism. This is a condition where, after prolonged periods of dialysis, the thyroid glands over-release the hormone that controls the density of the bones as there are no kidneys to regulate the thyroid hormone in the body. As a result, the bones become brittle, creating strain and pain as I undertake day to day activities. If not controlled, the bones are prone to breakage and deformation.
The Doctors and Nurses at the Nairobi hospital renal unit have recommended that only a transplant can help me regain my health to live a meaningful prolonged life. It is in this regard that I am appealing to friends and well-wishers to help me raise 5M Kenyan shillings (US$50,000) to help me travel to India to enable get a transplant and critical medication that will be required to sustain the donated organ before I get back on my feet again. A donor has already been secured.
At the moment, there are a few treatment processes that I need to undertake to prepare my body for this procedure. I need weekly erythropoietin injection to bring my hemoglobin levels to about 11 (from the current levels of 7.5). This involves the combination of Recormon and Venofer injections. My creatinine levels are very high, at about 2000 now, I need to bring them down to about 500 to enable to body accept any organ donation. This requires medication that will be prescribed by the doctor once we start the journey to the transplant. Once the body has been sustained to recommended levels, I will be ready for the transplant surgery.
A major fundraising is scheduled for November 9th 2018
My family and I appreciate your prayers and kind donations to give me another chance. God Bless!
