Josiah Beck KidneyWarrior

Josiah Beck is a 2-year-old from Caldwell County. He lives with what is the “rarest of a rare kidney disease." Josiah was born with Denys-Drash syndrome, nephropathy, and TMA-AHUS. Mouthful of sounds for such a little boy. Josiah had both kidneys removed at 6-months old, along with several other surgeries. He was on PD dialysis [Peritoneal dialysis] until November 21st, 2021. (PD is a process that removes waste products from your blood when your kidneys can't adequately do the job any longer.) “Then on that morning, November 21st, at 3:30am, we got the call that Josiah had a kidney. We rushed to the hospital for a kidney transplant.”That's good news, right? Well…. not ultimately. Our family was obviously hopeful—he had a transplant!—but sadly, the transplant didn't go as hoped and the kidney died inside of Josiah. On Christmas Eve, the dead kidney was removed in an involved surgery. At that time doctors found an infection in Josiah's blood and he was also put on antibiotics. “But that's not all, Doctors discovered Josiah's intestines had been nicked and he was leaking stomach fluids. He was taken off of all feeds, and a drain tube was put in. Josiah still remains at Levine's Children's hospital today (2/15) He is on hemodialysis and still has the drain tube. Josiah's Popaw has been with him at LCH throughout this whole painful, terrifying ordeal. It has been a very long few months. The costs are huge, with no end in sight. They're not sure how much longer Josiah will have to stay in LCH, and even when he gets out, we need to be able to stay somewhere local because he has “hemo dialysis” four days a week. Granite Falls to the hospital is a 4-hour roundtrip, plus 3-hours dialysis. So we can try traveling and bring him home, but it's a lot for him. We're struggling right now.... Mentally, Physically, Emotionally and financially. The only income for our household is disability. It's nearly impossible to keep the bills paid at home and gas and lodging to and from Charlotte for medical treatment. We are trying to get the funds to purchase a used travel trailer so we can stay in the area of the hospital. Any help would be greatly appreciated. There has been only one other case of what Josiah has that doctors know of, and that's a little girl in Cincinnati. Currently a hospital in Iowa is researching TMA, and we are hopeful that'll bring answers.
