Mona’s Medical Mishap

Mona had a medical misadventure this July! I am so thankful for the care Mona received from all doctors and technicians to keep her alive and well! Please help me to pay for the bills incurred for keeping my Mona safe!

At Mona’s annual exam, her vet found infection around a tooth and recommended a dental cleaning, hoping to prevent the need for extraction. He was able to fit her in the same week, her bloodwork looked good to proceed, and the cleaning went well! No need to extract the tooth.

However, when Mona got home, she stopped eating and started to grumble and growl when I tried to pet her or pick her up. She’s almost 10 years old so I gave time for her body to process the medicines from the procedure. I had pain medicine to support but without eating even wet food, she wouldn’t take the medicine either. After 48 hours (now Saturday), I took her to an urgent-care vet to find out why she was so unhappy. They ran bloodwork and found that her creatinine levels were twice as high as a cat with preliminary kidney failure. They suggested taking her to a vet hospital for 24-hour monitoring and IV fluid support.

Mona was admitted to the emergency vet at 11:00pm on Saturday night. They confirmed the abnormal creatinine levels and created a care plan for her. Mona stayed in the hospital overnight Saturday and Sunday, receiving great care from hospital staff, who monitored her health and watched her creatinine levels slowly but surely return closer to normal. The hospital team felt that she was on the path to wellness and could return home for familiarity and continued care. Mona is a picky eater so they hoped she’d get more nourishment from the place and food she knows.

Mona’s appetite is growing again and she seems much more comfortable at home with her snuggly blankets and familiar food. We are continuing subcutaneous fluid treatment this week to help her recover nutrients lost when she wasn’t eating. The vet recommends running a bloodwork test again in 2 weeks to confirm her progress back to her healthy self!

In order to rule out blockages or pressure in her kidneys and abdomen, the hospital performed an ultrasound on Mona’s tummy. While the doctor was able to rule out potential problems related to her kidneys, they noted a small lesion on part of her intestines. It could be due to an old injury of the intestines or it could be early signs of a cancerous growth. They prescribed an additional ultrasound to be completed within 4-6 months to review this area to ensure there is no additional movement or growth to the lesion.

Mona is priceless to me, so I tried to be conscious of decisions and cost but I know I will not be able to afford these expenses without having saved up for months. I am so thankful for the care Mona received from all doctors and technicians to keep her alive and well! Please help me to pay for the bills incurred for keeping my Mona safe!
