Supporting Ms. Angela's Recovery

To friends of Ms. Angela Russell, she's going to argue with me about this and I'm ready to deal with it.

What Happened

On Tuesday, April 28th, after experiencing flu-like symptoms for two weeks, Ms. Angela was admitted to the emergency room at Emory Hillandale. During routine checks, doctors discovered an elevated white blood cell count and was immediately transferred to the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University Hospital. In the midst of the transfer things turned for the worst and she was admitted to Emory's Intensive Care Unit early Wednesday, April 29 morning. While being cared for in the ICU it was dual confirmed that she has Acute Myeloid Leukemia by her team of doctors at Winship.

Ms. Angela's doctors immediately started her on chemotherapy and she underwent a clinical apheresis procedure to remove some of the excessive white blood cells accumulated in her bloodstream. Along with a host of antibiotics and steroids, she began to rebound and was moved out of the ICU back to the Winship Institute Monday, May 4 where she is now. She has been surrounded by her three children and six grandchildren during this entire experience.

Where Is She Now

Ms. Angela is still at Emory University Hospital in the Winship Cancer Institute unit and there is a long road ahead to recovery and full remission. The goal is to get her home soon where she can continue her chemotherapy treatments and begin physical therapy. We, her family, are working with her care team to set everything in order so that she can return home.

Why This Fundraiser

Ms. Angela is a fiercely independent retiree, known to make two or three ways out of no way no matter what.This experience has robbed her of that independence. All she wants to do is get back to her garden and the ministries she serves at church in her full good health again. So to support her gain that independence back, we are setting this fund up with all donations going directly to her treatment and home care expenses.

The Holy Bible teaches us in Matthew 7:15-20, "that you shall know them by their fruits." And if you believe that then you know Ms. Angela is an Angel amongst us. She has spent nearly every moment of her life serving others in hospital, homeless shelters, and amongst the community, treating everyone with the love and dignity they deserve.If you don't know her personally, then you have experienced her heart through her three children Jared, Angela (Elizabeth), and Stephen or one of her six grandchildren.
