For the past 7 weeks, my son Nairo-Sage has been fully immersed in an African Drum Camp here Portsmouth, VA — and it has completely ignited his spirit. The name of the organization is called The Day Program, where he’s been learning the art and spirit of traditional African drumming. Nairo-Sage has been Under the guidance of his wonderful teacher, Mr. Kamiruri Kelly, he has not only learned new rhythms — he’s discovered a deeper connection to himself, his culture, and his community.

Nairo-Sage has been playing drums since the age of 3, exploring sounds and movement even before he could tie his shoes. But over the last two years, something beautiful has shifted — drumming has become his passion, his joy, and his creative outlet. Now, at 8 years old, he’s taking his gift seriously and sharing it proudly.

On November 22nd in Hampton, VA, he’ll be performing in “A Day of Artz & Culture”, a special showcase presented by The Day Program, where he’ll get to show everything he’s learned this season.

His biggest wish this holiday season is to own his very own authentic “big boy” African drum, handcrafted in Guinea, West Africa — the birthplace of the instrument he’s come to love so deeply. His teacher, Mr. Kamiruri, travels there each year to teach, study, and build drums alongside master drummers and artisans. Bringing one of those drums home would mean the world to him — not just as an instrument, but as a sacred connection to heritage, discipline, and legacy.
