Newal Fam Injury Gaza

My name is Nina Gorman, a counselor and teacher from Philadelphia, PA, USA. I am doing this campaign for the five year old injured amputated child Nawal Assad and his family of eight from the village of Al-Masdar, Gaza, Palestine so that they can survive the pain and hunger from this genocidal war and hopefully evacuate after the war to Egypt so that Nawal can get the medical treatment he needs and so the family can start a new life. The family consists of father, Assad Jaba Awni Al-Badri (age 49), Salwa Muhammed Ali Pasha (45), Awad Assad Al-Badri (18), Mayada (16), Rabib (13), Yassin (11), Tayseer (10) and little Nawal (5).

I came to know the family through my dear friend Mohammed Qaisy who I have known since beginning of the war from social media facebook. We have worked to together for almost two years now to help many in Gaza with my many funding campaigns as they knock on his tent with their injured.

A little over a month ago, there was a bombing near the Badri family tent and 5 year old Newal who was playing outside was hit, sustaining shrapnel injuries in much of his little body leading to loss of his leg which had to be amputated and this other leg broken. He is in great pain and has endured much psychological trauma along with his family beside him. The family has petitioned for evacuation but like most severely injured children they wait with no response.

The family really suffers with having to choose between food and medications for Newal with the adults often not able to eat once a day and the children malnourished and hungry with slow healing of Newal due to lack of food except a little rice, noodles, some canned lentils often expired and almost no vegetables due to the blockade and high prices for what little food gets in from the high priced merchants of the occupation.

The suffering and destruction from the genocidal war in Gaza is unimaginable. Gaza has the highest rates of child killings in modern history, the highest absolute number of child amputees and the highest rates of child injuries. All hospitals have been bombed multiple times, thousands of medical and aid workers killed as well as hundreds of journalists, artists, teachers with civilian deaths now estimated as over 200, 000 and the genocide continues..

Due to the near total blockade since May of food, fuel, electricity, medicine and medical supplies most of the population is malnourished, and the injured suffer while aid rots at the borders. Newal needs further surgery for his legs and to remove the many pieces of shrapnel in his little body and will need medical attention the rest of his life including for fittings of prosthesis as he grows.

I urge you to donate what you can for Newal to heal, get medicine for pain, and for he and the family to be free of hunger, fear and to start a new life in Egypt where they hopefully can be happy again.

All donations will be transferred from my secure USA bank account to the secure PayPal of Assad Jaba Awni Al-Badri

Here are Assad and Salwa in their own words:

We are Assad and Salwa from the Al-Masdar village of Gaza.We do not know where to start with words since is so difficult to find words for what we and our family have endured. We grew up with much war and hardship as refugees of Palestine since we were children with our parents displaced in the 1948 Nakbah from their homes. Yet we succeeded in marrying and having beautiful children whom we were able to support with our shoe sales business though many around us had no jobs. We sold shoes at good prices and shared what we could with the poor and had a home of jpy despite the blockade of almost 20 years that led to little electricity and many goods like fish and household items and medicines not available.

But with this war we lost everything, our business, our home our dreams of the future and we were displaced many times, having to run and run again and move and move again to escape the bombs at great expense and sometimes losing our few items. Then one day there when we were watching the children play outside the tent, a great explosion came and it hit our little boy Newal. What a horrible day! We thought he would not survive and we managed to get him to hospital in time to save his life but due to lack of medications and supplies available from the brutal almost total blockade, the doctors could not save his leg. It had to be amputated and his other wounded leg had to have platinum installed. Now he has a lot of pain and cries especially when he cannot play like he used to with the other children and we cry but do not let him see our tears. Our hearts are broken for our little boy.

The children shake every night from the constant explosions and they worry they will be injured or burned or lose their legs and we worry for them too. We worry we will die and leave our children behind. This is the life that is a life of constant fear and hunger and destruction with seeing death and pain all around us. We and the older children have to travel many kilometers to get water and our backs and bodies are sore. We endure the heat and the cold and illness and smoke and things we cannot describe with living in a tent. The children cannot go to school. It is a life of constant struggle and pain from an occupation that wants to exterminate us.

We have to wait in long lines just for a bowl of beans or rice to share among us. We always feed the little ones first but cannot get Newal and the other children enough nutritious food especially vegetables and dairy to eat and be healthy so they lose weight, are malnourished and Newal struggles with pain every day and to heal properly with risk of infection.

Though we do not want to leave our precious land we feel we must make the difficult decision to do so in order to survive and to secure the proper treatment for Newal who now needs medicine to prevent his pain, supplements for bones and antibiotics to prevent infection. For his whole life he will need many surgeries and fittings for prosthesis so that he can walk.  So we hope if the crossings open and funds permit to travel to Egypt to start a new life and get the proper medical treatment for our five year old boy.

We urge you to find it in your kind heart to help us survive and be free of constant hunger, trauma and fears and to help our child Newal and all our children be free of pain and happy again.

     May Allah Bless you

Sincerely  Assad and Salwa
