Okoboji High to NHD in DC
We are a team of 5 high school students from Okoboji in rural northwest Iowa. This is our second year competing in National History Day. In 2022, we competed in Group Performance in the Senior Division. We placed first at both regionals and at state and earned one of two spots to Nationals. Normally, that would mean a trip to Washington D.C. However, Nationals were virtual last summer. Our goal is to make Nationals again this year which will be held in person at the University of Maryland in College Park near Washington D.C.
For the 2022-2023 year, we have taken the theme Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas. Our team chose to research ancient Spartan women and the many incredible rights that Spartan women held. We then compared those rights to how some modern day women still have not crossed the frontier for women's rights.
Our school district is small. They were able to pay for our registration fees and transportation to District and State competitions, but are unable to provide more beyond that. We are raising funds for:
Tier 1: $610
Cover costs for State hotels and food. We have to travel 6 hours roundtrip to Des Moines.
Tier 2: $100
Cover costume and set costs. Our 2 coaches are volunteers and receive no pay. They have helped pay for many items.
Tier 3: $8250
Cover costs for Nationals if we make it. Our school is not able to help, so we need to provide our own funds for travel, lodging, transportation, food and tours for 5 students and 2 coaches for 6 days/5 nights.
GRAND TOTAL: $8960
None of our team has ever visited Washington D.C. Two members are seniors, two are juniors, and 1 sophomore. We are all saving for college and want to embrace this opportunity to visit our nation's capital but need to do so in an affordable manner. We appreciate any donation you can provide!
