My dear friend Jorge spent New Year's Eve with my family and left early because he was not feeling well. The next morning he called and told us he was in the Emergency Room feeling very weak. They said he was a bit anemic and sent him home. This was the beginning of a whirlwind of events that followed with emergency room visits and hospitalizations. After 3 months of non-diagnosis, they finally said he was suffering from MDS a blood cancer. His treatments would be vigorous and every single day which would require him to travel to the cancer center. He was so weak that he was not able to do so. His insurance would not cover his transport and he was unable to care for himself at home. As a result, he was given any option other than hospice to die. He died a horrible death in a nursing home that would not provide him with the chemo he needed. I would like to help others in this horrible situation to be able to have access to care by helping to provide caregivers and transport. Jorge was a wonderful human being who gave everything he could to others. He did not need to die the way he did. Please help me help others who might find themselves in the same situation!
