Help Sean & Kimberly Find a Safe Place to Call Home
My name is Sean, and I'm asking for help for my wife, Kimberly, and me during one of the hardest times we've ever experienced.
My grandmother, Shirley A. Stoner, passed away at the age of 84. They were two of the most hardworking and dedicated people I have ever known. In my eyes, she and my grandfather lived truly fulfilling lives.
My grandfather served in the Unpĺited States Air Force, which gave my grandparents the opportunity to travel and see parts of the world together. When they returned home, they purchased their house in 1960, where they raised their family. My mother, Michelle, and my aunt, Melissa, grew up there.
My grandparents were incredibly hardworking people. For most of my childhood and well into my adult life, they both worked two full-time jobs. They built their lives through hard work and sacrifice and spent decades taking care of their family.
Then, about 13 to 15 years ago, my grandfather became very sick. His illness progressed incredibly fast.
Not long after that, our family experienced something none of us expected: a house fire.
Thankfully, we were able to get everyone out safely. My grandfather was taken to the hospital, but he later passed away.
Watching my grandmother lose her husband after spending so much of her life beside him was heartbreaking. For a while, she seemed almost lost without him. But she was strong. She eventually found her routine again and continued moving forward.
Then she was diagnosed with leukemia.
We went with her to appointments and tried to be there for her however we could. Her treatment was extremely taxing on her, and eventually I became her full-time caregiver.
For the last 9½ years, I dedicated my life to taking care of my grandmother.
After the fire, the house was rebuilt through the insurance process. My grandmother wanted the home she and my grandfather had purchased back in 1960 to remain in the family.
Unfortunately, after my grandmother passed away, things changed very quickly.
My mother lives out of state and does not want to keep the property. While everything was happening with the estate, I was still living there and caring for my grandmother's belongings. My own belongings and many of my grandmother's possessions were still inside the house and on the property.
Then the sheriff came to the property and escorted me off the home.
I was suddenly separated from the place I had called home and from many of the belongings that remained there.
I am now being told that the property may ultimately be sold, which makes the situation even more difficult because my grandmother had wanted the home to stay in the family.
My grandmother's will divides the property between myself and my two cousins. However, the estate still has to go through the appropriate process, and having an interest in an estate does not mean we have immediate access to a home or money.
And while all of that gets sorted out, Kimberly and I have to deal with what is happening right now.
We have been homeless for 9 days.
Because I am disabled, I am unable to simply return to work and replace the income we need. After spending 9½ years caring for my grandmother, I am now trying to navigate her loss, the estate, the loss of our home, and homelessness all at the same time.
Why We're Asking for $5,500
We've set our initial goal at $5,500 to help us get through this immediate crisis and establish stable housing.
The money raised will help with:
• Temporary lodging
• A security deposit and first month's rent
• Food and basic necessities
• Storage for our belongings
• Transportation
• Phone and other essential expenses
• Other immediate costs associated with getting back into stable housing
We're not asking anyone to fix our lives for us.
We're asking for a chance to get somewhere safe, catch our breath, and begin rebuilding our lives while everything surrounding my grandmother's estate is being worked out.
Losing Shirley has been devastating. She was my grandmother, but for the last 9½ years, she was also the person I dedicated my life to caring for.
Now, after losing her, we have lost our home as well.
Kimberly and I are simply trying to find a safe place to live and get our lives back on solid ground.
If you're able to donate, anything helps, whether it's $5, $20, $50, or whatever you can comfortably give. If you aren't able to donate, sharing this fundraiser could be just as valuable to us.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, for remembering Shirley with us, and for helping Kimberly and me through this incredibly difficult chapter.
