Prison Break: Pittsburgh
Okay, so my name is Kevin and this is my story. I grew up in a small town in central New York. If you know the town, you're either from there or you have a weird obsession with the history of women's suffrage. After high school I attended college in a small town in north-central Pennsylvania. If you know it, you probably went there. When I was an undergrad I took a great opportunity to live and study in Russia for a year. It was great. Later, I finished my undergrad studies, and went on to obtain a Master of Science in English Education from the same university. Since then, I have been living in Pittsburgh, PA, where I applied for numerous teaching positions, but never managed to land one. So, I took on a number of not-so-cool office jobs and even a retail gig. Basically, I've been in a rut for the last decade. Now...I have the opportunity to actually use my education to teach English. In Spain. I applied to a program back in January for a teaching job and I was accepted. Since then, I have been placed in Carballo, a small city in the Galicia region of Spain. Cool, right? Yeah. Now...this is where this do-hickey comes into play. I now have to get a Visa (which means I have to get to New York City, to the Spanish Embassy, and not having a car means a bus or train ride is in my future), go to a doctor to get a clean bill of health (not having insurance because I work a cash-paying construction job means it's all out of pocket), get a background check, get a plane ticket, and do all the myriad things that one has to do to compact his entire life and possessions into 2 suitcases. Oh, and I'm not exactly swimming in gold coins a la Scrooge McDuck. So, yeah. A friend encouraged me to do this, and even promised me a specific sum to help me out because she knows how badly I need this change. And...so...I really need to get my butt to Spain and get out of this massive, decade-long rut. So, at the behest of my friend I'm asking for help. I feel weird about it, for sure, but my need for change outweighs my feeling weird. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, so much so I really lack the words to express it.
