Rhema is a seven-year-old, mute and deaf girl with a resentful but loving mother, Janice. Janice rejects Rhema’s handicap. As a sign of denial, she refuses to learn sign language. Rhema supplements her mother’s lack of acceptance by learning to lip read to effectively communicate with her mother. Janice was traumatized by her mother’s verbal abuse and discouraging her in her God given gift of writing poetry. This event had a lasting effect on her mentally and essentially destroying her once bright and enthusiastic faith in God. After discovering that Rhema had a unique gift of writing (just as Janice when she was seven), Rhema claims God told her to perform one of her poems at a poetry night event. To avoid her daughter feeling the same way she felt from her own mother’s rejection of her gift, Janice complies with her daughter’s request. Rhema performs at the poetry night with sign language but yet the audience is able to hear her poetry audibly.
