On March 31, Riley was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain. What doctors discovered was life-changing — a 34 cm mass in his abdomen attached to his pelvis and bowels, as well as multiple lesions on his liver ranging from 4 cm to 19 cm. After days of tests, scans, and consultations, Riley was diagnosed with Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) — a rare form of cancer that affects the digestive tract.

What is GIST?

GIST is a rare type of cancer that begins in the cells of the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly in the stomach or small intestine. Because of its rarity and the way it can spread, GIST is often difficult to detect until it reaches an advanced stage. Treatment is complex and usually includes a combination of targeted therapies, surgeries (which unfortunately Riley isn’t a candidate for at the moment), and ongoing monitoring through scans and tests. For Riley, this means indefinite treatment and regular oncology appointments as his medical team navigates the best plan of action for his case.

Riley is now home, but life has changed drastically. He is unable to work for the foreseeable future, and his days are filled with medical appointments, scans, and treatment planning. By his side every step of the way is his loving partner, Katelin, who is not only caring for Riley but also holding down a job and taking care of their three children. She is balancing the roles of caregiver, mother, and provider — an overwhelming load for anyone to carry alone.
