Sam's DR Medical Mission
Hello! My name is Sam. I’m a Registered Nurse who earned my BSN at UM-Flint, and after ten unforgettable years working in the ICU, I’ve returned to UM-Flint and am now entering my final year of Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) school. I’m excited to share that I have an opportunity to participate in a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic in February 2026, and I’m reaching out for your support.
During this trip, I’ll be working with a dedicated medical team to provide free surgeries and medical care to people who truly need it. This work is especially meaningful to me. Back in 2011, while I was still a nursing student, I went on a similar mission trip. I’ll never forget one spirited patient who, upon hearing my name, started calling me “Sammy Sosa” with a huge grin. I helped care for him in the recovery room, and even though we didn’t share a language, his warmth and gratitude spoke volumes. That memory, and so many others from that trip, helped reinforce how much compassion and skilled care can mean to someone, and it ignited a lifelong commitment to give back whenever I can.
Returning to UM-Flint for my CRNA training is a dream come true, but being a full-time student means I’m unable to work right now. That’s why I’m hoping for a little help from my friends, family, and community so I can make this trip possible.
Any contribution, big or small, will make a difference—not just for me, but for the patients I’ll be able to serve. Thank you so much for reading my story and for considering a donation. With your support, I hope to go back, give back, and maybe even earn a few more “Sammy Sosa” nicknames along the way!
With gratitude,
Sam
